Here are some precautions you can take to stay safe and healthy during the rainy season

  • Avoid walking or driving in flooded areas. Floodwaters can be contaminated with sewage and other harmful bacteria, which can cause serious illness. If you must walk or drive in flooded areas, be sure to wear boots and gloves to protect yourself from contact with the water.
  • Use insect repellent. Mosquitoes are more active during the rainy season, and they can carry diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. Use insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin to protect yourself from mosquito bites.
  • Drink clean water. Avoid drinking water from open sources, such as streams, rivers, and ponds. These sources of water may be contaminated with bacteria and other harmful organisms. Instead, drink bottled water or water that has been boiled or filtered.
  • Wash your hands frequently. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the toilet, changing diapers, or handling raw meat. This will help to prevent the spread of germs.
  • Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables that are not cooked may be contaminated with harmful bacteria. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating them.
  • Get enough rest. Your body needs more rest during the rainy season to fight off infection. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
  • See a doctor if you are sick. If you develop symptoms of a cold, flu, or other illness, see a doctor right away. Early treatment can help to prevent the illness from getting worse.

Here are some additional precautions you can take to protect your home and property from the rainy season:

  • Trim trees and shrubs away from your home. This will help to prevent branches from falling on your roof or windows during a storm.
  • Clear gutters and downspouts of debris. This will help to prevent water from backing up and flooding your basement or foundation.
  • Have a sump pump installed. A sump pump can help to remove water from your basement or crawlspace if it floods.
  • Store important documents and valuables in a safe place. This will help to protect them from water damage if your home floods.
  • Have a plan in place in case of a power outage. This could include having a generator, flashlights, and batteries on hand.

By taking these precautions, you can help to stay safe and healthy during the rainy season.
