Heera Mandi: A Masterpiece By Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Netflix

Heera Mandi

Heera Mandi’s history goes back centuries, with roots in Lahore’s Mughal era. Initially known as Shahi Mohalla (Royal Neighborhood), it served as a haven for courtesans called tawaifs who entertained the elite with classical music, dance, and poetry. During this era, the courtesans were highly trained and respected figures, not simply sex workers. The name came later, possibly in honor of a resident official or referencing the “diamond” (Heera) status of the courtesans. The area’s character shifted somewhat under Sikh rule, with some brothels opening alongside the existing courtesan culture. Despite later attempts to regulate or close Heeramandi, it has endured, though its current state reflects a mix of performance spaces and a more limited red-light district.

As all of you may be aware that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s well crafted, masterpiece of cinematography is being screened on Netflix platform. The web-series has 8 episodes, each of about one hour. It’s a must see web-series. Here is some key elements:

A Feast for the Eyes

Bhansali remains a master of visual storytelling. “Heeramandi” boasts intricate sets and costumes that transport viewers to a bygone era. The lavishness evokes his past works, creating a world of opulent beauty.

Narrative Choices

Opinions differ on the narrative. Some find the plot predictable, with familiar characters and story-lines. The pacing, particularly in the beginning, can feel slow, demanding patience from viewers.

Performances and Style

The series is buoyed by strong performances, particularly Manisha Koirala’s portrayal of the powerful courtesan Mallikajaan. However, the dramatic dialogues and archetypal characters may feel old-fashioned to some viewers.

Verdict: A Visually Striking Period Piece with Room for Improvement

“Heeramandi” is a visually captivating period drama, but the story and pacing may not be for everyone. Fans of Bhansali’s signature style and historical grandeur will likely appreciate it. However, those seeking a more intricate narrative might find it lacking.

I feel, a more episode would have been added to portray the struggle of tawaif of Heeramandi for journey of Independence. In my personal opinion, a must watch web-series and on 10 scale, I rate this 8.5.
