History

Muhurat trading is a one-hour trading session on Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. It is considered an auspicious time to invest in the stock market, and many traders and investors believe that it can bring good fortune and prosperity.

Muhurt Trading

The tradition of Muhurat trading dates back to the early days of the Indian stock market. In the past, stockbrokers would start their new year on Diwali. To commemorate this occasion, they would open new settlement accounts for their clients on Diwali. This auspicious time was known as Muhurat. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was the first to institutionalize this practice in 1957, and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) followed suit in 1992.

Over time, the tradition of Muhurat trading evolved to include all traders and investors, regardless of whether they were starting a new year or not. Today, Muhurat trading is a one-hour trading session on Diwali that is considered to be an auspicious time to invest in the stock market.

Process

Muhurat trading typically takes place in the evening of Diwali, and the exact timing is announced by the stock exchanges in advance. The session typically lasts for one hour, but it can vary from year to year.

During the Muhurat trading session, all regular trading rules and regulations apply. However, the mood is often festive and celebratory. Many traders and investors dress in traditional attire and perform religious rituals before trading. This is a way to show their respect for the tradition and to seek blessings for prosperity and wealth.
